In this outstanding Oscar winning, psychological and political thriller, we get a fascinating insight into the lengths and depths that the East European government went to in order to keep tabs on the lives of its population in the 80's. When cold and brutal official Wiesler is given the task of spying on acclaimed playright Dreyman and his actress girlfriend, he relishes the task, knowing that if he uncovers subversive behaviour he will gain favour with his boss. But the longer he listens in on the couple, their friendships, passions and ideas, the more he realises that his own life and the harsh political regime are lacking in colour and joy in many respects. Slowly he begins to doubt the morality of his job and politics. As the lines between orders and compassion become blurred, Wiesler becomes more involved with his subject, walking a dangerous path between his duty and his new found reality.
Historical adventure based on the life of Ioannis Varvakis. Before becoming a key figure in the Greek War of Independence, Varvakis (Sebastian Koch) lived as a pirate where he made his fortune in the transportation of caviar eggs. As his wealth grows, Varvakis becomes an acquantaince of royalty when he is employed by Catherine the Great of Russia (Catherine Deneuve). But despite his past adventures and the power he has acquired, Varvakis still does not feel content in his life's work and eventually returns to his homeland to fight in and fund the struggle against the Ottoman Empire.
Vincent Garenq co-writes and directs this drama based on real events. The film follows French accountant André Bamberski (Daniel Auteuil) in his struggle for justice following the death of his daughter Kalinka (Emma Besson/Lilas-Rose Gilberti) in mysterious circumstances. Accusing Kalinka's stepfather Dieter Krombach (Sebastian Koch) of deliberately drugging her while she was staying at his German home in Lindau, André is mortified when autopsy results come back inconclusive and the case is dropped. After battling for decades, André finally takes the law into his own hands in a desperate attempt to force a retrial in France.
